Meeting for Worship

Sitting in Silence

Meeting for Worship is a communal gathered stillness, where we can be open to inspiration from the Spirit of God. In our meetings we find both peace of mind and challenging insights, deep community and a renewed sense of individual purpose. Not everyone finds the word “God” helpful – some Quakers use a different image or concept such as “spirit” or “the light”. Seating is usually arranged in a circle or a square to help Friends stay conscious that we are worshipping together as equals. There is no one minister. We are all ministers.

The silence may be broken if someone feels called to say something which will deepen and enrich the worship. This breaks the silence for the moment but does not interrupt worship. After this “vocal ministry” we return to our awareness of something deep and powerful that transcends our ordinary experiences. This sense of direct contact with the divine is at the heart of Quaker worship and nourishes Friends in their day-to-day lives.

Meeting for Worship in Nature

When the weather is nice, some Friends meet in the woods, in the circle of benches located at the back of our parking lot.
